Footprints of pelicans and their human friend on the beach

My field trip to Straddie was great!!  I was there this time for Animal Ecophysiology class, doing an experiment on fiddler crabs and coloration effects on heating rates.  I was disappointed when we couldn't go out to the field to collect them.  Apparently they only emerge in the cool mornings to wave their claws at the sun.  That's when you catch them, or so we were told by our tutors.  So since we have already paid them, we let the tutors do it for us..

Right at the start we had problems with our equipment.  Some damn things just won't work when you need them, no matter how bloody high tech they are.  A simple machine that was supposed to cool water down barely functioned.  Probably it wasn't even waterproof.  We went back to using ice cubes from the freezer.  Those ice cubes were bought from the pub across the road.

And then came our animals.  I loved our fiddler crabs, was surprised at how small they were in reality.  It was bad, beyond cruel, that we had to insert a wire thermometer in place of their back legs.  Kind of like that movie "Saw" just scaled down to animal size.  Equal torture, only with less screaming.  If it's any help, we cooled them down to 10 degrees in order to stone them, AND THEN pulled their legs off.

This was what our set-up looked like, after the crabs have been "wired".  The 2 lamps concentrated heat on the crab, while the wire within its body recorded the temperature as it heats.  We sophistically named this the Thermal Arena, which, is actually bloody cheap-looking in the picture. That small old-school machine on the right was last calibrated in 1995.  I was only in Std 2 that year.

Some crabs failed us by dying and dropping off their big claws.  Once they do either of that, they're useless.  So death started to become a major issue.  By mid Saturday, the amount of vulgarities I was uttering had increased.  We were loaning crabs from another group just to make up a sizable amount to conduct "proper" research.  Desperate, in other terms.  While all this was going on, we had a bit of a break down by the beach.

Got too close, the pelicans freaked out and shat all over the sand

Swollen egg mass of a moon snail

No rolling and camwhoring by the beach and please get that sand out of your ears.

My trusty booties

That night, we mastered the art of keeping sane with music.  The lab turned into a small dance floor for those who refused the local pub invitation.  I'm thankful that everything turned out well in the end.

I credit God for all that's been said and done these couple of days.  Working through this weekend has taught me a great deal about patience when things get unpredictable.  When situations become a bitch (don't they always), take a break and let God do His thing.

Missing a few things typically Malaysian:
  1. Late night Mamak sessions with friends.
  2. Milo ais (kau-kau, boss) and roti planta (roti pisang also can!)
  3. Shopping malls that close late, not 5pm
  4. Durian pig-outs
  5. Nasi lemak breakfasts without sambal
  6. Kopitiam roti bakar with kaya and butter
  7. Chicken rice. omg give me some of this NOW.

It's almost 4am. I'm paying the price for that cup of coffee I had earlier.

Since I can't sleep, I'll tell you about my day.  This morning I skipped a class to finish up on some drawings from yesterday's lab.  Labs for Vert Bio account for quite bit on the mid-sem test and past experieces with lab exams have made me really kiasu this time.  That's why I think my absence in class today was justified.  There's just an immense amount of material put out there that 3 hours a week isn't enough to observe AND understand everything.  That's the reason I came back this morning.

I was looking at a piece of a whale's spine today and it's as big as a pail.  Then whale's entire size came into perspective for me.  I'm like the old lady who's taking her time to cross the busy street.  I like learning about those skeletons and skulls.  I like labeling parts and fitting together the bones of a bird's wing.  I like finding out that there's a mistake with the penguin model because someone has replaced the wrong foot on it.   I like holding skulls that once belonged to a viper or a wolf.  And it's fun because who'll ever do it when those animals are in the wild?

As for the better stuff today: I went shopping after such a long long time!  I think the shops miss me.  Had Japanese sweet & sour chicken for lunch.  It actually came with a salad.  Bought a pink shirt, something I've never done on my own will before.  That shirt with that shade of pink actually looks good on me. Hah.

Played around with tortoises this afternoon in physiology lab

Ringmaster testing for burst speed.  Getting the tortoises to move from the center towards the outer rings required a bit of effort on our part.

So we mimicked their natural flying predators by flapping our hands and making bird noises.  I doubt the turtles could even hear us.  But once they sensed our shadows they fled so fast!

Scribe Kathy, ringmaster Simone, timekeeper Teresa, bird Lyndel, photographer Vivian

This tortoise wasn't that interested in our experiment

Enough, enough.  Back to work!!

They keep you on your toes, me thinks.

Last Sunday night I gave myself a good shock after I realized that I had a mid semester test to sit for the next morning.  Thou shalt not commit this again, I told myself.

On Wednesday, in the middle of a rush, my Spongebob glass snapped into half after I poured hot water into it and Milo spilled everywhere.  Gone.  On the Thursday before I broke a ceramic bowl while sorting out the dish rack.  The day after that I had accidentally slammed my cup into my housemate's glass causing it to crack and break off.  She said, "Oh nevermind, I have three more in the cupboard you can break..."

Oh the drama in my life. Haha.  Thankfully I still have all my fingers.  I'm trying to become more aware of where I'm placing things by not simply banging stuff around the house.  To really slow down and do one thing at a time, which is not easy when everything else demands full attention at the same time.

First of all, it's a Friday night and the Sabbath is here.. I'm so excited that I finally have time off away from school.  Nothing but peace and rest.  I've got lots of recapping to do about the past few weeks so I'll let the pics tell the stories.

The first week of August got me all worked up.  Not only did school just started, but I had the spy agents from Subang USJ come visit me.  I'm talking about my mum, Uncle Tai, half sister Valerie plus Endang who decided to put full faith in Air Asia X to spend a winter holiday in Brisbane.  We had a great time catching up and I wished their stay was longer.

The curls run in the family if you haven't noticed.  Curls seem to disappear the older you get..hmm.. It was a Monday afternoon when they drove up to meet me after classes.  And guess what we had for dinner..

Freaking STEAK at Southbank Riverside.. Yeah!  Took us a while to hunt for a place to eat because no restaurant would serve dinner until 6.  Finally my steak prayers were answered and we were all led to this great place that served not only great food (came with great portions but nothing's too big for me) but had good views of the riverside too.

Welcome to Surfers Paradise!  This is the view from the 30th floor at night.
During daytime it looks like this:

I want to wake up to this every morning!

Rich people's property surrounded by the Nerang river

Saturday morning, I brought them to Central church to meet most of my friends.  This is "Praise in Harmony"- made up of a talented bunch of guys from Central. Tony is that guy in light blue that looks rather lost in this pic.

More meals and shopping followed on Sunday

I stood there reading the plaque for 5 minutes and couldn't make out what it was trying to say about the guy.Valerie got herself shoes at Target while I got myself a super heavy duty frying pan--
a great and practical souvenir from the Gold Coast.

My mum

It's always nice to have a piece of home when you're in a land far away.  ____________________________________________________________________

This week has kicked off to a good start.  Subjects for this semester have been so-so, I'm still waiting for things to get exciting in animal physiology lectures.  Each class is more demanding than the next in terms of reading and assessments.  But I fret not, for I know there are more field trips to come in the following weeks!!  I think this time we're going north to Noosa National Park for a day and also to Straddie again.

I met some familiar faces from previous courses last semester.  Some of them came back with new shoes, bad hair, less acne, and new scarves around their necks.  As for me, my hair is longer, my glasses have not changed and my ass now carries some holiday weight.  I still use the same bag-- the mini Mambo backpack that's 5 years old and has carried all sorts of crap with me throughout the years.  The front label has fallen off and the zips now split in protest when the bag is too stuffed.  Inside every compartment there's sand from all the beaches I've visited-- which tells you how often it's been washed (almost never).  It's one of those things I've begun to appreciate after realizing how long it has stuck by me despite the abuses I've put it through.

Brisbane's weather has been strange lately and inconsistent too.  On Monday the sky was overcast and remained grey the whole day.  It was sunny at 1st on Tuesday and then it rained just when I decided to my laundry. ALWAYS, I tell you!  Today is chilly, not too cold but just fresh.

A funny thing happened in class this morning.  I was in a lecture on vertebrates around 8 am and everyone was going along with the flow of the lecture.

"...so not all tunicates have *TTTTTRRRR* tailed larvae *TTTTTTRRRRRRR* and not all retain their juve *TTTTTTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRR* nile features...  I hope the noise goes away *TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR* soon..."

Out of nowhere came these loud bursts of drilling, jolting the heck out of everyone.  The lecturer tried again to speak above the noise but only succeeded for 2 seconds before it cut him off again.  He glanced out the door and then looked back at us.  Then he got off the table and calmly walked out, presumably to tell the workers to shut the hell up and put the drill down.  With his size, he could have jolly well picked them all up by their collars and threw them against the wall like the Terminator.  We waited 2 minutes and then there was silence.  Temporary cease-fire.  Then he came back inside, looking all satisfed with himself.  In a way he reminded me of Gandhi's approach to war with speech and not guns.  So harmony was restored and the lecture resumed in a civilized manner with no further distruptions...until 20 minutes later after we were dismissed, the drilling resumed.  I don't know how the other students could put up with it.

I'm going to get on with my reading now and be distracted by a million and one other things on the web, like this for instance...

The month-long break is officially over.

Quite a few interesting experiences have taken place during the break.  Enough to say that I've grown more comfortable with taking risks and breaking routine every now and then to try something different.

First class starts at 8 tomorrow, which will be in 7 hours.  This week there will be a ton of notes to print off, cover sheets and forms to update and submit, schedules to check and re-check and books to be carted off from the library...How I wish it was pre-school all over again.  My only possessions then were a spare change of clothes and a pillow, which was to be used during 'nap-time' in class. My sleeping habits have been cultivated at a very young age, as you can tell.

Okay fast forward 15 years.  Right now I need my sleep.  I will get through this week!!!!

I was at the mall a few days ago looking to buy a baby grater, the kind that measures 2-3 inches high.  I am determined to find this grater, no matter where the search takes me.  At one of the stores that I happened to browse through, salsa music was playing on the speakers. The music had many of the Aussie aunties grooving along.  Some of them swayed their hips while looking at cutlery and plates.  It's true.  Dance like no ones watching 'cos I don't really mind.  I walked over to the counter, looked down and there they were. Rows and rows of Putumayo world music albums, waiting to be bought by someone who doesn't mind handing forth a day's worth of wages in exchange for a compilation of world music wrapped in screaming bright colors.

If you haven't seen them before, the album covers of Putumayo somewhat resemble the pages of a 7 year old's coloring book.  The colors, they grab you and the fun pictures make you wonder if you'd like to experience something new.  Perhaps revamp that dusty media player of yours, if you can afford to give it a shot.  You look at the back cover and more often than not, every track is unfamiliar.  They are the kind of things you can't convince your mother to buy for you because all you might get in reply is along the lines of "For what? Isn't the radio good enough??"

I had picked up one before at a night market in Cambodia.  CDs packed in those flimsy plastic you want to rip off the minute you get home.  The heavenly feeling of stepping into a pirated CD shop.  Knowing that I can afford at least one CD made me stay longer that usual, because standing there I could take all the time in the world deciding between Spongebob's "The Great Snail Race" and Putumayo's "Caribbean Party".  Almost like a life and death decision, I know.  I settled for the Putumayo one and thought it wasn't such a big loss if I hated the music.  After all, it was less than what I'd pay for A&W's rootbeer float in Bangkok.  The album turned out great despite having bought it based on its front cover illustrations alone.  The language made it impossible to know what the people in the Caribbean sing about in the CD, much less figure out the track titles.

And so the music kept going and I continued my search for that grater.  There was a whole cabinet filled with salt and pepper grinders from top to bottom and nice paper napkins I wished were washable.  Still no grater.  By this time, the salsa had already been replaced with a new track.  Those aunties who were once swaying their hips at the plate display were suddenly waving their plates at the cashier people. I gave up my search and walked out, making my mind up to sway when I finally find that grater.

This morning I woke up to something different.  I went to work! And so begins the long list of things I'd like to buy for myself...haha.  Well at least now I'm fully aware of what goes behind the scenes of your everyday market-fresh sandwich sprouts.

What happened today was basically sorting, cutting, weighing, packing and labeling a whole bunch of organic snow pea sprouts.  Essentially I was being exploited as a one-woman production line, being made to do a variety of jobs around the farm much to the owner's delight..  The part I enjoyed doing was the sprout cutting which involves the use of a bloody sharp blade.  While Emily (the owner) was showing off her cutting techniques, she mentioned that she never cut her hands before and that people usually slice the sides of their thumbs if they're not careful.  Although she made it look easy, it wasn't.  By the time I finished, I had 7 cuts across my left hand.  The thumb was unaffected, funny enough.  Wish me luck for tomorrow. I don't want to be cutting anything other than sprouts.

Just a few hours ago: Teriyaki chicken for dinner and Dark Knight!!
Money well spent..

Recounting the people and places that made June a great month!!

A Friday night in Salisbury. Pr Johnny is on my right and downhill to the left, Steven and Darrel.

A rainy day in the city, taken just before heading out to Salisbury

Two weeks ago, Pr Johnny and his mates Steven, Darrel and Jason from Melbourne dropped by to visit.  Well a brief introduction to this man-- we met before in MC when he was a chaplain in 2006.  His sermons were great and there was a funny one about "speaking in tongues" that's still stuck in my head.  It's always good to see a familiar face in a foreign place and that was what meeting him was like.  After the initial chit chat, he went, "What are you complaining about the weather for?! Melbourne is seriously cold man.  You'll need jackets la, umbrella la..everything with you when you go outside.  This is nothing."  After that comparison I began considering Brisbane's 10 degree nights as "tropical".

Mt Cootha: Faces obscured but check out the city lights!!

Balls..Spongebob makes an appearance along with Shrek and Spidey.

Went to Beachhouse to catch Anna sing for the last time.  This woman can set the place on fire with her voice alone.  It was that good.  When I got off the bus, her acapella version of Amazing Grace was so loud and clear that it took me all the way to the club.  For this pic, I wasn't going to stand in front of everyone to take a close up shot.  You'll just have to excuse the tables ;-)

To my mum and brother, cheers to making it to your 43rd and 17th birthdays!!

To my mum:

  • You've reared me from age 0 until now and this calls for a big clap, thank you and hug for all that you've provided-- good food, bitter herbal teas, clothing, credit card number (ahaha jk), transport (fetch here fetch there, think I'm your driver ah?!) and so much more;
  • Not forgetting all your worries, advice, love and laughter;
  • Thank you for making me who I am today and for trusting me with my decisions, although I pretty much know I can't always get away with everything.
  • Looking forward to your trip here to Brisbane so you can taste my cooking for once.

To Villi:

  • We both have our dad's trademark mole, although mine is more of a fullstop and yours is more erm.. obvious. Like the bullet here.
  • Growing up, we probably spent more time shouting and making each other's life miserable.  haha What to do lah.  Now we don't dig each other's eyeballs out and it's fun watching you shop for women. (ahem, not girls)
  •  You're probably the only person in the world I can nag at.
  • Oi. Last night asked you when is SPM and you said November.  After that you said "Brb.. playing game."  Not too late to pull up your socks wei and there's no reason for you not to pass.  After that you can fly lah.  Not now.
Well happy birthday again you two.  Bigger celebrations when I come back!!!

Bringing you highlights from my trip last weekend to Straddie :-)) This time it was for plant field studies so we were required to come up with plant research that was feasible in 4 days. Honestly it sounded intimidating at 1st but it wasn't that bad after I found people who were easy to work with. It's so true that the battle is half won when people in a group get along. Anyhow let's not forget that I've actually learnt something here, aside from snorkeling and watching killer whales and dolphins!

Everybody Knows:
You can't be all things to all people.
You can't do all things at once.
You can't do all things equally well.
You can't do all things better than everyone else.
Your humanity is showing just like everyone else's.

So:
You have to find out who you are, and be that.
You have to decide what comes first, and do that.
You have to discover your strengths, and use them.
You have to learn not to compete with others,
Because no one else is in the contest of being you.

Then:
You will have learned to accept your own uniqueness.
You will have learned to set priorities and make decisions.
You will have learned to live with your limitations.
You will have learned to give yourself the respect that is due.
And you'll be a most vital mortal.

Dare To Believe:
That you are a wonderful, unique person.
That you are a once-in-all-history event.
That it's more than a right, it's your duty, to be who you are.
That life is not a problem to solve, but a gift to cherish.
And you'll be able to stay one up on what used to get you down.

Sookie and her mistress 2008
Good times with Sookie.  Big already but still trying to be cute. Nevermind, as long as you pandai, you can roll in the mud and play in the rain as long as you want.

Puppies: Fresh from the oven, tiny and slippery.
If I'm not mistaken there were 5 in the litter, and two died later.

Fast forward 3 months: Hiro and Sylar

What you got there in your mouth??

Sookie

Back in 2003 when we had Govind, the crazyass Pincher b***h that we rescued in a thunderstorm.  That dog lived with us for a while and quite often annoyed people to death with her incessant barking.

Poodle and me canoodling in 2003.  Yes, Poodle was his name although he looked nothing like one.  Man we loved each other to bits.  He was a jet black cocker spaniel that was good for nothing, lazy, and would hump everything in sight. But he was an old softie at heart and always thought the best of the ladies around him.
